Fire Prevention and Education Services Division

The Prevention and Education Services Division conducts fire code enforcement, review, and revision. This division also conducts plan reviews and issues permits required by the Building Officials and Code Administrators International (BOCA) Fire Prevention Code. In addition, this division provides public education programs, public information and relations services, and fire/arson investigations.

Services provided to the public include:

  • Fire Prevention
  • Fire Inspections
  • Fire Safety Education
  • Fire Safety Consulting to the University of Illinois Campus

Major activities of the Prevention and Education Services Division include:

  • Representing the department at various fire, life safety, and public relations meetings and events.
  • Enforcing fire and life safety codes to include field inspections, approving new building plans, coordinating activities with the Office of the State Fire Marshall, and witnessing the installation and testing of fire suppression and detection systems and underground tanks.
  • Providing fire and life safety education programs, news releases, and information distribution.
  • Investigating fires to determine origin and cause, including interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence, assisting the police in prosecution for arson, and counseling juvenile fire setters.

Participating in school and community-based career programs promoting fire service as a career choice.
