Urbana Fire Rescue Services would like to remind you to be careful when grilling. Grilling causes an average of 1,500 structure fires and 4,800 outdoor fires a year.
Here are some tips to follow:
- Designate a “kid’s free zone around the grill until it is completely cooled. Never leave a grill unattended when it is hot if children or pets are present.
- Keep the grill at least 3 feet from other objects, such as buildings, shrubs, and bushes.
- Never use gasoline or kerosene to light a charcoal fire.
- Never try to restart a flame by adding fluid to an already lit grill.
- Dispose of charcoal away from children and pets after cooling it with a hose. Make sure coals are completely cooled before disposing of them.
- Use insulated, flame-retardant mitts or long-handled tongs and utensils. Coal temperatures can reach 1,000 degrees.
- Check grill hoses for cracking, brittleness, holes, and leaks. Make sure there are no kinks in the line.
- Check the tubes in the burner for any blockage from insects, spiders, or grease. Use a pipe cleaner to clear any obstructions.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Manufacturers will usually replace the manual at no charge if you misplace it.
If you smell gas, turn off the gas immediately, and do not attempt to light the grill until the leak has been fixed. Never use a match to look for a leak.
