Since its implementation in 1993, Urbana School Resource Officers (SROs) have been serving the Urbana School District #116, following the guidelines set by the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO). UPD adheres to the “triad” model for SROs, as recommended by NASRO, which outlines three distinct and equally important roles for SROs.
The first role is that of a law enforcement officer. SROs handle initial police reports of crimes on campus, take enforcement action when necessary, enforce criminal law, and ensure the safety of students, staff, and the public, including addressing potential armed intruder events.
The second role is that of a teacher. SROs provide information and lectures on various law enforcement-related subjects to students and staff. These presentations cover topics like general safety strategies, occupational training, leadership, life skills, traffic safety, interactions with law enforcement officers, and legal issues.
The third role is that of an informal counselor. This role is crucial for providing information to students, parents, staff, and administrators on various topics and creating a safe space for students to discuss issues in both the school and the community.
The “triad” model serves as a valuable resource for students, parents, and staff, fostering positive relationships between stakeholders and the police. Additionally, SROs collaboratively develop strategies to address problems related to and affecting young people, ensuring the protection of students and staff.
