With over two decades of dedicated service in law enforcement, Lieutenant Mike Cervantes brings extensive experience to his role as Deputy Chief of Police. His commitment to public safety originated during his tenure in the United States Navy, where he attained the rank of E-5 and served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, stationed aboard the USS Taylor and at Naval Station Great Lakes as a Military Police Officer.
After his honorable discharge in 2006, Lieutenant Cervantes joined the Urbana Police Department and continues to make substantial contributions to policing. He served in the Patrol Division and assumed specialized roles, including the Street Crimes Unit, K-9 Officer, Honor Guard, Awards Committee, Criminal Investigations Division Detective, and Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Officer.
Recognizing his exceptional contributions, Lieutenant Cervantes was promoted to Sergeant in 2019, overseeing patrol division officers before advancing to Lieutenant in 2021. He then oversaw the Criminal Investigations Division.
Lieutenant Cervantes' commitment to professional development is evident in his educational achievements: a Master of Science degree in Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership from the University of San Diego, graduation from Northwestern University Center for Public Safety School of Police Staff and Command, a Bachelor of Arts degree in General Studies from Eastern Illinois University, and an Associate of Applied Science degree with a law enforcement focus from Excelsior College. His extensive background showcases a dedication to excellence and ongoing improvement in the field of law enforcement.
